Housing the Human came to an end after an 18-month process of development and presentations at the various organizing institutions. We’ve documented the different steps of the project through conversations with the artistic directors, designers and architects, as well as affiliated experts.

Watch a recap of the festival in Berlin in which, during a packed two-day program on October 18-19, the five participating architects and designers presented their final prototypes to the public as room-spanning installations, films, and performances.

Housing the Human marks the culmination of over a year of research with a festival showcasing five concepts for the future of living and social coexistence.

On Saturday, October 19, as part of the Housing the Human Festival, the public is invited to join an open seminar with renowned experts and professionals centered around three defining themes: Methodological Frictions, on the practical hurdles of working across disciplines; Usefulness, on the tension between artistic freedom and practical implementation; and Prophecies, on the promises and missteps of working with innovation and future-oriented topics.

At the Housing the Human Festival, architectural historian, theorist, and curator Beatriz Colomina will discuss what role does the bed receive in the age of social media and constant connectedness.

Following her lecture-performance, she will invite architectural theorist Mark Wigley, the five prototype designers, and others to a “Bed-In” for a series of conversations in pajamas.

On Saturday, October 18, as part of the Housing the Human Festival at radialsystem, the public is invited to join the event After Money, a game experiment that imagines a moneyless future, played live by prominent architects, theorists, and decision makers.

According to architectural technologist Mae-ling Lokko, our kitchens could soon become micro-factories for sustainable mushroom-based building materials. All we need to do is introduce a new habit around cooking a meal.

From April 4–30, 2019, Housing the Human was hosted by Copenhagen Architecture Festival, where the first-stage prototypes of the five selected concepts were presented and discussed. DAMN° Magazine’s Anja Neidhardt took this opportunity to lead a conversation with the four artistic directors Freo Majer (Forecast Festival), Pippo Ciorra (Demanio Marttimo. KM-278), Josephine Michau (Copenhagen Architecture Festival CAFx), and Jan Boelen (Z33 and 4th Istanbul Design Biennial) about their roles and individual perspectives.

On Friday, November 2, 2018, Housing the Human presents a public forum at the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial. The five projects are presented at Yapı Kredi Cultural Center.

On Saturday, October 13, 6-8 pm, Forecast Festival will host Housing the Human for the first time. In the large auditorium of Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt, the five projects selected for further development will be presented to the public.

Selecting from 14 submitted concepts, Housing the Human invited five talented thinkers to develop and produce their concepts. On August 23, 2018, the jury chose five proposals for further realization, which will result in prototypes for future lifestyles, social spaces, housing, and concepts for coexistence.

Fourteen invited participants—pioneering and ambitious initiatives, offices, and individuals who excel at working across disciplines—convened at the innovation festival.

On July 20, 2018, Housing the Human kicks off at the innovation festival Demanio Marittimo. Km-278 near Ancona, Italy. Fourteen pioneering and ambitious initiatives, offices, and individuals have been invited to test their concepts in a night of discussions with architects, designers, curators, and futurologists.
